Launched on 13 January 2006, the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) provides the 'stage for young Malaysian talents' to perform a variety of great symphonic music in one of the world's greatest concert venues, the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS, located in the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur.
Comprising 100 musicians from all over Malaysia, with an average age of 18 years, the MPYO meets twice a year at camps lasting between 2-3 weeks, during which members of the orchestra will receive sectional coaching from the musicians of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO).
Under the direction of the Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Mr. Kevin Field, the MPYO has grown from strength to strength, and has performed in side-by-side concerts with the MPO. It has also toured Malaysia every year, and performed at sold-out concerts, including one in Singapore in 2009. Its next international exposure is planned in December 2012 in Brisbane, as an exchange collaboration with the Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra. Auditions are also held every year to provide aspiring and passionate young Malaysian talents with the opportunity to be part of the exciting journey of the MPYO.
